I'll drink to that!

There are a lot of popular days in December. The 7th, Pearl Harbor Day, of course Christmas Eve, Day, and New Year's Eve too. There is another one that helps you celebrate the holidays though. Today is Repeal Day. On January 16, 1919, the government passed the amendment that prohibited the sale, manufacturing, and transportation of all alcohol.

The government thought that all the world's evils were to be blamed on the alcohol. Of course, everyone got a rude awaking when crime grew with prohibition as racketeers got involved. Speakeasies popped up all over the place. The prohibition failed horribly. So on December 5th, 1933, the 21st amendment got passed repealing the 18th amendment and prohibition was out for good.

So today, everyone needs to have a drink (sis you can pretend --- and don't feel left out, I can't today either) to celebrate! I mean can you really imagine the holidays, or most Saturday nights for that matter, without a nice beverage? I think the holidays would be a little harder to bear!

For those who want to celebrate with a blast from the past, there are modern day Speakeasies everywhere still. Apparently near the hotel we stay at near LGA (New York City) there is a pretty cool one called "Angel's Share". You have to pass through a Chinese restaurant, out the back door into an alley and knock on a fairly hidden door. Inside it is like being back in the 1920's. That is not the only one though.
