My Kind of Theater!

Sunday, March 8, 2009

There is a new trend in movie theaters --- UPSCALE! In an effort to regain the people who now watch movies at home on their HD flat screen TVs and 7.1 surround sound, movie theaters are beefing up their game. They are pulling out all the stops and are charging quite a bit for it, but people are again going to the movies.

So far, in the US there are 50 "adult premium" theaters from CA to NY, and are mainly where you would expect (Miami, Chicago, LA, NYC, etc) but the crowds are coming. For good reason too. Along with the normal new release movie (although that has been beefed up with top of the line HD projectors and sound systems) the experience is like none other. The crummy seats have been replaced by over sized arm chairs and ottomans in some, and the theater style lazy-boy style seating in others. The snack bar has been replaced by an actual bar with martinis to rival any bar in NYC and dozens of worldly wines and draft beers. The snacks have evolved from stale popcorn and nachos (although I do like the soft pretzels) to sushi and steaks. Not bad huh?

I know that looks like a bar and lounge, but that is actually inside a theater. It also features call buttons that call an attendant for blankets and pillows. The entire bar and food menu are all ordered using a touch screen unit, so as not to disturb other movie patrons, although they are already far enough away, as it only seats 40 people where a normal theater hits around 300.

Guess its time to go to the movies again huh? No more Junior Mints though. Bring on the Sushi and beer!
